Ethiopia’s State Minister of Health Dr. Kebede Worku and U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Deborah Malac opened a meeting of President’s Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) implementing partners at the Addis Ababa Sheraton on May 29, 2008. At the meeting, Ethiopian and American partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS reviewed their progress to date, discussed future plans, and prepared for a global meeting of PEPFAR partners next week in Uganda.
A delegation of Ethiopian and America government officials and of Ethiopian PEPFAR implementing partners will attend the 2008 HIV/AIDS Implementers’ Meeting in Kampala, Uganda from June 3-7. In Kampala, the delegation will present 17 abstracts to share Ethiopia’s best practices and successes in combating HIV/AIDS.
This year’s Implementers’ Meeting will focus on building the capacity of local prevention, treatment, and care programs; enhancing quality; and promoting coordination among partners. The meeting’s theme is “Scaling Up Through Partnerships: Overcoming Obstacles to Implementation.” A total of 1,700 attendees are expected, representing governments, nongovernmental organizations - including faith- and community-based groups, multilateral organizations, the private sector, and groups of people living with HIV/AIDS.
